Takeaway hot cups may look like they're simply made from paper, but paperboard alone isn't suitable for holding hot liquids. A barrier is required to help prevent moisture soaking through and weakening the cup.

Two common terms businesses may come across are PE-lined and aqueous-coated hot cups.

Both provide a barrier between the beverage and the paperboard, but they use different technologies. Understanding the difference can help cafés, takeaway outlets, offices and other businesses make a more informed choice.

WHY DO PAPER HOT CUPS NEED A BARRIER?

WHAT IS A PE-LINED HOT CUP?

PE stands for polyethylene, a widely used plastic.

In a PE-lined cup, a thin layer of polyethylene is bonded to the paperboard to create a barrier against the liquid.

PE-lined cups have been widely used for many years because they provide reliable performance and can be produced economically.

Aqueous technology is increasingly being used in takeaway food and beverage packaging, including hot cups.

Depending on the particular product, aqueous-coated cups may offer:

DOES AQUEOUS MEAN PLASTIC-FREE?

Not necessarily.

The term aqueous refers to the water-based dispersion coating used to create the barrier. It shouldn't automatically be interpreted as meaning every aqueous cup is completely plastic-free, recyclable or compostable.

The safest approach is to check the manufacturer's specifications and recognised certification for the particular product.

Businesses should also be careful with broad environmental terms such as eco-friendly, biodegradable or plastic-free unless those claims can be supported.

ARE AQUEOUS CUPS COMPOSTABLE?

Some are, but certification is important.

A manufacturer may have a particular aqueous cup certified to a recognised home or industrial composting standard.

The certification applies to that particular product. It shouldn't automatically be extended to every cup using an aqueous coating.

 

Expert Tip: When comparing compostable packaging, look for recognised certification rather than relying solely on words such as “compostable”, “green” or “sustainable”.

WHAT ABOUT SINGLE, DOUBLE AND TRIPLE WALL CUPS?

The barrier coating and the number of cup walls are two different things.

The wall construction primarily affects insulation and how comfortable the cup is to hold.
